Top News of the Week – Governments implement AI regulations
In late May, the European Council approved the EU AI Act, legislation meant to foster the development and uptake of safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems. State Governments in the U.S. and countries across Asia have been pursuing different AI regulatory paths.
Key Takeaways:
The EU AI Act creates a risk-based approach that imposes stricter rules on AI systems that pose higher risks. The law prohibits AI systems that are used for social scoring The AI Act provides exemptions for AI systems used exclusively for military and defense applications.
Similar to Europe’s GDPR, which establishes regulations around the use of data and privacy, the EU AI Act will likely shape the way American technology companies develop and deploy AI systems.
In Asia, countries are pursuing a patchwork of national regulatory regimes that will likely make business between the most important economies more difficult.
A proposed law in the State of California would require AI companies to insert a “kill switch” in AI systems that could disable them in cases of emergency, but tech companies point out that a “kill switch” requirement would undermine the competing desire for open-source models as it would make the “kill switch” accessible to everyone.
