Michelle Giuda on Bloomberg TV: “The end goal is US competitiveness”
Addressing the U.S.-China technological competition, Michelle Giuda, CEO of the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue, told Bloomberg TV that, “The imperative is for the United States and our partners and allies to lead in technology. That means we have to innovate faster, smarter and better, and we have to make sure that our companies are not contributing to China’s ability to beat us in technologies like artificial intelligence.”
Top News of the Week – China doubles down on party-state control and commits to technological dominance
Last week, the Chinese Communist Party finished their once-in-a-decade “Third Plenum” meeting in which they set the course for the Chinese economy over the next ten years. In an effort to kick-start their lagging economy, Chinese leaders announced that they will rely on “high-quality development” through advanced technologies in order to generate “new productive forces.” In essence, this means that Beijing will not change course, but instead double-down on the kinds of party-state directed industrial policies that have caused many of their problems and undermined their relations with other countries.
Chinese leaders made the unusual step of highlighting “national security” in their Third Plenum declaration. In past Third Plenums, the Party’s focus was solely on economic issues. This plenum subordinated economic concerns to national security imperatives.
China’s trading partners and rivals should conclude that technology diplomacy will play an even more important role as the PRC tries even harder to dominate the world’s emerging technology sectors for military advantage.
