Top News of the Week––The White House provides a legislative framework for AI
After a year in office, the Trump Administration has published a comprehensive framework for Congress to consider in developing national Artificial Intelligence legislation and regulations. The question now is: will Congress work together in a bipartisan manner to craft legislation that nearly all believe must be in place.
Key points:
The framework lays out seven key policy areas: Protecting children and empowering parents, Safeguarding and strengthening American communities, Respecting intellectual property rights and supporting creators, Preventing censorship and protecting free speech, Enabling innovation and ensuring American AI dominance, Educating Americans and developing an AI-ready workforce, and Establishing a Federal Policy framework, preempting cumbersome state AI laws.
This framework presents Congress with the opportunity to craft legislation within this framework, or if they disagree, to offer their own framework, or adjustments, which the President can either sign or veto.
For many media outlets, the main point of fixation was the idea that the Administration’s main aim was “blocking state laws.”

The Last Word
“We hear about AI and ChatGPT and the role that it’s playing at home and at work, but it also really matters to our national security. Our ability to shape the trajectory of that technology for the future of our country, and to do it hand in hand with our allies so that we’re making the free world safer and more secure, is critical to securing the future for the United States today.”
