Top News of the Week – UK Prime Minister Announces First AI Safety Summit for “Like-Minded” Countries
Following the G7 leaders meeting and the creation of the “Hiroshima AI Process,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the United Kingdom will host the first Artificial Intelligence Safety Summit this fall. The UK intends to make itself a leader in AI policy, as well as a commercial and research hub. Positioned between the European Union and the United States, the UK will try to stitch together a set of AI safety policies that both sides of the Atlantic can agree to and achieve interoperability between regulatory regimes.
London might be well served to continue the work started by the Dutch and South Korean Governments who co-hosted the REAIM (Responsible AI in the Military domain) Summit in February. The event brought together 61 countries, including the United States and the People’s Republic of China, to endorse a 25-point ‘call to action.’
