Tech Diplomacy Now: U.S. - Japan Technology Cooperation
This week, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida arrived in Washington for a State Visit and further cemented the foundation of U.S.-Japan cooperation in technology, industrial policy, and defense. It appears that Japan may join the Pillar 2 of the AUKUS agreement, focused on cooperation in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, hypersonics, and cyber technologies. At the end of the week, President Marcos of the Philippines will join President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida for a trilateral summit focused on deterring PRC aggression in the South China Sea.
Key Takeaways:
Japan is transitioning from being a regional power to becoming a global power.
Japan is rapidly becoming the most important partner for the United States.
For nearly 15 years the United States has been slowing rebalancing its geopolitical focus away from Europe and the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific, the visits from Japanese and Philippine leaders this week only reinforce that long term trend.
Despite facing controversies at home, PM Kishida’s visit to the United States is likely to give him some boost in the polls.
